The Rococo period is the third era we explore as part of our five part series on the Five European Influences on Modern Day Flora Design. So we’ve already bent our minds reconstructing the ancient in the Renaissance era in the first part of the series and then we experienced all the drama of the world of Baroque in the second, so now let’s soften everything up by stepping back into the Rococo period with all its french prettiness.

The 18th century Rococo period ran from 1720 to the 1760 and saw a movement from the deep and dramatic to the light and pretty. Floral bouquets started to appear on ceramics, tapestries and fabrics not just art.

Along with Marie Antoinette think of the French Drouais and his Portrait of an Elegant Lady, Nattier and his Portrait of a Woman, Called the Marquise Perrin de Cypierre and his Henriette of France as Flora, along with Fragonard’s The Swing. While just a short moment in time, its impact has been instrumental in the world of weddings – if Style Me Pretty ever needed to go undercover it could use the name Style Me Rococo – and no one would know the difference.

For Rococo wedding ideas, typical flowers of the time would have been delphiniums, blue hyacinths, white roses and pale pink hydrangeas in a compote, alabaster urn or Dresdenware.

And the great news for couples looking to celebrate a destination wedding in the Cinque Terre in Italy is that there is an abundance of delphiniums,  hyacinths, roses and hydrangeas here and we just happen to be right down the road from the home of alabaster Volterra – Rococo wedding style sorted!

With its dusty pastels and prettiness, Rococo continues to play center stage in weddings today, with terms such as French Country, Provence Style and Shabby Chic without the Shabby, creating new spins on this old style. Bouquets are fuller, tighter and ow, so much more feminine – très belle!

But we never stop there. For years we have been using greenery in bridal bouquets, bountinere, table centrepeices, table runners, place card settings, napkin ring holders, wedding arches, aisle markers, stationery, cakes – you name it we’ve greened it!

For us it’s all about taking the natural and wild beauty of the Cinque Terre in all its luscious green glory and reflecting it in the wedding’s relaxed rustic style.

We like to add masses of whiteness or metalics of bronze, copper, gold, silver or pewter to raise the rustic look to a level of chic or glamour for our destination weddings in Italy, Cinque Terre.

And we’re doing this by shouting arms stretched from the coloured rooftops: “Ging Gang Goolee – wedding planner winners two years in a row!”

We’re filling every piazza encounter with a subtle “did you know we’re in the top five percent of wedding professionals in Italy?” In Italian of course: “Sai che noi siamo nel primo 5 per cento dei professionisti di nozze in Italia?”

And we’re running up the cobbled roads into the local florist, hairdresser, makeup artist, caterer, vineyard, hermitage, castle ruins, restaurant, bar, video operator, photographer, stylist, musician, bnb and then down to the harbour to the boat skipper, taxi, fisherman and miniscule truck driver (the truck, not the driver) to let them all know – “we’ve received a five star rating from all of our couples!”

And “we” is right – at Cinque Terre Wedding it takes a village to raise a wedding.

But we aren’t just running around the quiet village, saluting too many glasses of limoncino, we are serious wedding planners after all, so we’ve also been dreaming about what an event celebrating this award would look like.

Taking our inspiration from the award winning greats of the region: the romantic poets Byron and Shelly who wrote their best masterpeices while living here and Nobel Prize Poet, Montale, who wrote about the Monterosso lemons, we’ve fused together the greats of the old world writers with the current trends of the wedding planner world: Rose Quartz, Serenity Blue and metallics to create this loveliness.

Surrounded by the red grapes of one of our favourite wedding venues, the ancient Buranco Vineyard in the village of Monterosso, we were thrilled as there couldn’t be a more fitting colour to capture the spirit of the old world vineyard life here in the Cinque Terre.

The red grapes, figs and wine can be used to create beautiful Marsala bouquets, table centerpieces and place settings and can also be featured in your aperitivo and menu. Roses, Dahlias and Calla Lilies are just a few of the flowers available here in this colour tone. Paired with rustic wood, vintage wine barrels, soft green grapes and ancient stone walls, the Marsala colour palette pops with sophistication and romance.
